What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million each year. Root canal therapy, which dates back to 1756, is an elective dental procedure for people who want to invest their time and money in keeping their teeth. Root canal therapy can save your tooth when decay has already damaged it or will do so.

The therapy is performed by removing the pulp from the center of your tooth and filling the cavity. This can prevent a painful infection from developing in the pulp and spreading to other teeth. Root canal therapy can also treat an infection that’s developed in an abscessed tooth.

Dr. Charles Flowers begins the therapy by injecting a local anesthetic in the area of the tooth to numb your teeth and gums. Then he’ll gently remove the pulp from the tooth using his hi-tech rotary instruments. Lastly, he’ll fill the inside part of your tooth below the gum line with medicine and a filling material that is cemented into the root of your tooth. Under normal circumstances a root canal-treated tooth can last you a lifetime.

Signs of a Root Canal problem

Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is the space within the root of a tooth. Root canal infections are one of the most commonly occurring dental problems. Symptoms that you may need root canal therapy can include:

  • Pain when biting or chewing food
  • Very painful toothache that keeps you up at night
  • Pain that begins in the tooth and can spread to the jaw, ear or head
  • Swelling in your gum that may, upon applying pressure, release pus or blood
  • Moderate to severe lingering toothache that may throb and be sensitive to cold or heat

However, you may experience no pain at all yet still need root canal therapy to save a tooth. During a regular checkup, Dr. Flowers can spot a tooth in trouble early on that will need root canal therapy to save that tooth.

Your next step

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. If you think you might need root canal therapy, then your next step is to get a full oral exam, digital X-rays and a consultation with Dr. Flowers. If you do have a problem, he needs to determine the extent that the root is infected and make sure you get the proper treatment to save your tooth.
